William Thompson was born in 1775 in Cork city to a wealthy merchant father, yet he spent his life attacking the corrupt institutions that protected such men. He wrote practical plans for education and happiness, forcing local power to answer for wasted funds and cruel schools. His radical clarity threatened the comfortable men of Ireland and England, so they forgot him instead of learning from him.
