The plaque marks the bridge where Sir William Rowan Hamilton discovered quaternion multiplication on 16 October 1843. He cut the formula i² = j² = k² = ijk = −1 into the stone itself, turning a passing thought into a permanent wound in the bridge. Genius sometimes arrives so suddenly it must be carved before it fades.
Here as he walked by on the 16th of October 1843 Sir William Rowan Hamilton in a flash of genius discovered the fundamental formula for quaternion multiplication i² = j² = k² = ijk = −1 & cut it on a stone of this bridge.
