William Henry Gregory

William Henry Gregory was born at Ashtown Lodge in Phoenix Park, Dublin, on 1 July 1816, the only child of Robert Gregory and Elizabeth Gregory. He became a Conservative politician whose infamous Gregory Clause forced destitute farmers to surrender land before receiving famine relief, contributing to the eviction of nearly 200,000 people. He later governed Ceylon from 1872 to 1877 and married Augusta Persse, becoming the father of flying ace Robert Gregory.
