This commemorative plaque records: Sir William Fairbairn (1789 - 1874) Engineer, inventor of the riveting machine, designed the Lancashire Boiler and jointly set up the Mechanics Institute. Started business from a workshop in High Street in 1817. Recorded plaque organisation: Manchester City Council.
