Explorer TomWestburn Park gives Aberdeen a broad patch of green where footballs, tennis balls and children on little bicycles all appear to believe they have right of way. Across from Victoria Park, it mixes organised games with open grass, so I can take a walk while pretending the match nearby is under my expert management.
VisitAberdeenshire lists tennis facilities, bowling greens, a children's cycle track and play area, as well as open grass for less organised recreation. The Gilcomston Burn runs through the park in an open section shaped with water features, and a pond adds another pause between the courts and pitches. Arrive with a racket, a child or half an hour and find your place. I would bring a whistle, but nobody would let me referee for long.
The park's setting opposite Victoria Park makes it easy to extend a visit without travelling across the city. Spend a while by the burn and notice how a narrow strip of water changes the feel of an otherwise busy recreational ground. If teams are playing, the open lawns may be lively; on a quieter day, the pond and trees can hold your attention. The park earns its keep in both moods.
Westburn Road gives the main address, and facilities may have their own booking or opening arrangements. Check current details for tennis, bowls or indoor activities before making them the purpose of your trip. General park paths and grass are the simple pleasure here. Follow the burn for a moment, then pick whichever bit of green looks ready for company.
