Well in Gortnagane

Well

What is recorded here

Abutting the external face of the wall of the cashel (KE068-022001-) named 'Cathair Craobh Dearg' and known locally as 'The City', at ENE. This well is a D-shaped area (straight side 2m NNW-SSE; projecting 3.4m to the WSW). The entrance, which has a chain across it, leads into a level concrete interior. The circular well (diam. 0.68m; D 0.29m), filled with spring water, is at ground level. There is a bench against the wall at ENE. According to local information, this well replaced the original holy well (KE068-022007-), which was outside the cashel wall at WSW, c. 1950. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011
