What is recorded here

Half a century or more of tide has sanded the stakes into the mud, but they still stand in a shallow line where the river meets the sea. That is no accident. Someone drove them there to force the fish into a narrow path, and the water has kept the shape ever since.

Described by Colm Chambers as 'a series of wooden stakes in the mudflats of the Owenabue estuary between Carrigaline and Crosshaven in the townland of Hoddersfield, County Cork. A 20m to 30m section of the structure is visible 10m to 30m from the shore. There are perhaps 20-30 roundwood stakes measuring between 10cm and 15cm in diameter and projecting 20cm to 30cm above the mudflat. I sent Aidan O'Sullian of UCD photographs of this structure and he said it is "almost certainly a fishtrap [...] it looks medieval (10th-15th century)".

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
