Weir

Weir, fish

What is recorded here

Weir is a tick-shaped wooden fish trap beside Bush Island, County Clare. It still stands in the estuary clay, two fences joined at a narrow angle, waiting for the tide to push silver fish into its mouth. The Shannon gives up its catch only when the water rises, so the trap works without hands, patience, or light.
On the N bank of the Shannon estuary adjacent to Bush Island. Described by O’Sullivan (2001, 300) as a post medieval ‘large tick-shaped wooden fishtrap in estuarine clays at LWM, c. 300m SW of Bush Island. Flood fence oriented NW-SE, 8m long. Shore fence oriented N-S, 370m long. The enclosed angle is c. 30 degrees. July 2000.' (O'Sullivan 2001, 200-203, 300, Bush Island 2A) Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 21 August 2019
