Weir is a large tick-shaped wooden fishtrap on the north bank of the Shannon estuary beside Bush Island in County Clare. Its two fences form a narrow forty-degree angle, guiding silver fish into a deadly corner before the tide returned them to the open water.
On the N bank of the Shannon estuary adjacent to Bush Island. Described by O’Sullivan (2001, 300) as a post medieval ‘large tick-shaped wooden fishtrap in estuarine clays at LWM, c. 50m N of Bush Island 2A, constructed to use the same shore fence. Flood fence oriented NW-SE, 47m long. Shore fence oriented N-S, 320m long. The enclosed angle is c. 40 degrees. July 2000.'
