Weir stands on the northern Shannon bank beside Bunratty West, a short east-west line of posts hidden inside a narrow mudflat creek. The structure dates from the post-medieval period and measured four to five metres when examined in February 1997. It is the kind of practical fish trap people still build where tidal water forces itself through a gap.

On the N bank of the Shannon estuary adjacent to Bunratty West townland. Described by O’Sullivan (2001, 299) as a post-medieval ‘post alignment, oriented E-W, 4-5m long, in narrow modern mudflat creek to the west of Quay Island. February 1997.'
