Weir stands on the western bank of the Owenagarney channel, a short distance northeast of Little Quay Island. Medieval hands built V-shaped fishtraps there, reusing and reconstructing post-and-wattle fences across steep estuarine clays at least four times. The water likely did the hard work, driving fish into narrow gaps where people waited with patience and nets.

On the W bank of the River Owenagarney channel in the Shannon Estuary, c. 40m NE of Little Quay Island. Described by O’Sullivan (2001, 298) as medieval ‘post-and-wattle fences and brushwood structures representing at least four phases of reuse and reconstruction of V-shaped fishtraps on the steeply sloping estuarine clays.
