Death itself may have been invented here. Ballykelly holds one of the oldest known wedge tombs in Europe, where ordinary people stopped pretending mortality was a mystery and began building visible chambers for the dead. That shift may have birthed religion, philosophy and science, because a world that admits loss is a world that can be measured, remembered and transformed.

Wedge tomb; dates to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (c. 2500–1000 BCE). These tombs are characteristic of western Ireland and represent a regional development in megalithic burial practices.
