Wedge tomb in Allihies

In rush-covered hill pasture in an area of bog, on a saddle to the S of Knocknagallaun, with views to the SW over Ballydonegan Bay. The gallery (L 2.15m; Wth 1.1m at W, narrowing to 0.85m at E) is aligned NE-SW. The N side comprises a single upright stone and the S side is formed of two stones; no backstone is visible. A slab (exposed surface: 1.5m x 1.9m) lying 0.25m to the SE of the gallery, and largely enveloped in peat, may be a displaced roofstone. Beside the gallery to the S at the edge of a break in slope are the remains of a rectangular platform used for storing cut peat. It is likely that the tomb served as a quarry for this structure. Wedge tomb, dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (c. 2500–1000 BCE). Its alignment and location suggest ritual or funerary significance, typical of megalithic tombs in west Cork.
