Weathercote Cave is a deep limestone opening with an underground waterfall, long admired by visitors and early students of the Yorkshire Dales.

How it formed

Chapel Beck dissolved the limestone and broke into a great open chamber where water falls into passages below.

People and events

Landowners admitted paying visitors from the eighteenth century, while artists, travellers and cave explorers recorded the dramatic waterfall.

Local stories

Early descriptions treated the dark shaft as a natural wonder, helping make cave scenery part of the first tourism in the Dales.

What can be seen

The fenced shaft, rock walls, waterfall and water-worn passages remain, though entry is controlled because of steep drops and loose rock.

Why it mattered

It matters as one of the Dales' earliest celebrated natural sights and as a clear window into water working beneath limestone.
