Wartime Shelters

Cardiff Castle has a wartime surprise inside its walls: corridors that once held people waiting for an air raid to pass. Step into the shelters and the grand castle above suddenly feels less like a postcard and more like a place where the city came together under real pressure. During the Second World War, tunnels within the castle walls became public air-raid shelters. Cardiff Castle says they could hold more than 1,800 people, and special ramps helped people enter quickly when sirens sounded. Research has found evidence of bunks, kitchens, toilets and first-aid posts in the walls. The present displays reconstruct how the shelters may have looked and use sounds to help visitors picture the experience; they are an interpretation of that history, not rooms left untouched since the war. Imagine being told to hurry into a medieval castle wall while the city outside went dark. I can manage a cheeky tale about a Norman keep appointing itself chief air-raid warden, but the real story belongs to Cardiff residents who used this unusual refuge. Their need turned an old defence into a twentieth-century shelter, and that twist is more remarkable than anything I could invent. The Wartime Shelters are part of a standard Cardiff Castle visit, along with other castle areas; check the castle's current admission and opening arrangements before you go. Once inside, spend time with the details rather than rushing through the tunnels. Then walk back into daylight and look at the same walls again: their stones have done more than one job for this city.
