Walmgate Bar black plaque

This black commemorative plaque records: Walmgate Bar. Probably built in the reign of Edward I. The wood and plaster building on the inner side is of the Elizabethan period. This Bar was greatly damaged during the siege of York 1644 by Parliamentarians' battery fire from Lamel Hill. The portcullis and gates remain and this Bar alone retains its barbican which was erected in the reign of Edward III. The Arms of Henry V are on the outer side. The Bar was restored in 1648 and completely renovated in 1959. Recorded plaque organisation: York Civic Trust.

Walmgate Bar is one of the medieval gateways into York, built during Edward I's reign, and it uniquely retains its barbican from the time of Edward III. It suffered damage during the 1644 siege of York in the English Civil War but was restored in 1648 and renovated again in 1959.
