Vent pipe in Commons has decorative grooves round its base because even the sewer needed a decent introduction. That’s how you get plumbing accepted in polite company: admire the tailoring and pray nobody asks what it does.

Vent pipes are unusual and becoming increasingly rare in Ireland. The design and detail of this vent is similar to contemporary cast-iron lamp standards of the late nineteenth-century. The simple form of this functional object is enhanced by the fluting to the base.
