Explorer TomAt Stratford's East Bank, the new V&A East Museum puts art, design, fashion and performance into a conversation with the city outside. Tom says the exhibits are still arguing over who gets the best window. Their real connections are far more interesting.
The museum opened in 2026 beside Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park as a new home for creative work and ideas. Its free Why We Make galleries bring together hundreds of objects from different parts of the Victoria and Albert Museum's collections, asking how making shapes lives across time and place. Changing exhibitions and new commissions add present-day voices. That breadth is the point: a piece of clothing, a stage design and a crafted object may have more to say to one another than their labels suggest. The East Museum is a separate venue from the nearby V&A East Storehouse, so check which building holds anything you particularly want to see.
Find the museum at 107 Carpenters Road in Stratford. General entry is free, though some exhibitions and events have tickets. The operator has announced a temporary closure on 29 and 30 October 2026, so check its current visit page before travelling. Begin with the free galleries and choose two objects made for very different purposes. Ask what each maker needed their work to do. If you book a paid exhibition, leave enough time for the rest of the building as well. The park and surrounding East Bank give you a chance to see a newly built cultural district in use.
Tom's window dispute has ended without a winner. Walk the galleries and decide which unexpected pair of objects starts the best conversation for you.
