Unst Heritage Centre occupies the former Haroldswick Primary School, where children were taught from the 1880s until 1997. A history group formed in 1976 as the oil industry brought rapid change, first opened a small centre in 1986, and moved its growing collection into the closed school in 2001.
Read the whole record
Unst Heritage Centre occupies the former Haroldswick Primary School, where children were taught from the 1880s until 1997. A history group formed in 1976 as the oil industry brought rapid change, first opened a small centre in 1986, and moved its growing collection into the closed school in 2001.
Why it was built
The building was erected as Haroldswick's school, with three connected classrooms and high windows providing a permanent place for local children's education.
People and work
Teachers and pupils used the school for more than a century; from 1976, Unst History Group members recorded memories and collected evidence of older island life.
How it changed
A classroom and staff facilities were added about 1988, but falling enrolment closed the school in 1997; the Heritage Centre opened here in May 2001.
What survives
The former classrooms survive as galleries, while the adjoining teacher's house remains separate; records and objects explain crofting, fishing and island families.
Why it mattered
The reused school links two local efforts to pass knowledge between generations: formal teaching and the recording of memories before rapid economic change erased them.
