Submarine (period Unassigned)-(1915)

What is recorded here

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records U 23 as Submarine (period Unassigned)-(1915). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
U 23 was a German U-boat lost in 1915 during World War I, likely sunk by the British anti-submarine ship HMS *Vigilant* after a brief engagement off the coast of Scotland. The submarine was part of the Imperial German Navy’s efforts to disrupt Allied shipping, and its loss marked an early success for British naval defenses against the U-boat threat.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
