Turrasbunallia — Report the wrong picture

Ó Muirgheasa (1936, 153, Nos. 62 and 63) recorded that 'There are two Holy Wells (DG037-014----; DG037-014001-) in Craig or Cregg townland, two miles from Rathmullen on the road to Rathmelton, one on each side of the road. One of these is called Tobar Breallagh, probably from St. Baothallach, 5th October'. This well (DG037-014001-) is not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. According to local information, it was located on the S side of the road along the shoreline of Lough Swilly and was washed away. There is now no visible trace (pers. comm. Linked to Saint Turgesius (Turras or Turrasbunallia), an early Irish saint associated with holy wells and healing traditions; the site reflects a long-standing devotional practice, with the name possibly derived from his Irish form "Túr Mhaise" (Turgesius's well). The dual wells suggest a ritual or symbolic duality in local Christian or pre-Christian tradition.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
