At Tregoyd Mountain Riders, a horse can carry you from a Welsh hillside yard towards the open Black Mountains while you concentrate on looking competent in the saddle. The centre welcomes different riding abilities, so tell the staff what you can actually do. I once told a pony I was an expert, and it immediately asked for references. This riding business began in 1958, when E. L. and D. G. Jones turned a farming idea into pony trekking. Their son Haydn now runs it with staff. The centre near Felindre has direct access to mountain trails, with routes crossing commons, lower hillsides, woodland and stretches with views toward the Wye Valley. An easier trek and a faster ride for experienced riders are different outings: the operator reserves its open-country hacking for people who can canter confidently on varied ground. Horses and ponies, rather than a fixed route, shape the day's pace. Book ahead and describe your height, weight and riding experience so the centre can match horse and rider. The operator's main season runs from March to late October, with winter rides depending on ponies available. Staff provide a safety talk and riding hats, and weather can change the route. The approach from Felindre includes a narrow uphill lane with passing places, so follow the operator's directions. This is guided riding, not permission to wander through the yard or onto grazing land. Once the horses settle into their stride, let the mountain view arrive without trying to race it. Tregoyd has spent generations helping visitors meet this landscape at a different speed. If my pony requests references again, I shall list my excellent skills at holding the reins.
