Explorer Tom Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire gathers trees from across the world, and Tom claims each one arrived carrying its own suitcase of leaves. Some might have needed trunks. The real collection offers more than a joke: paths, colour and changing seasons make a return visit a different journey. The Holford family began planting this landscape in the Victorian era, when collectors brought trees and shrubs from many regions into British gardens. Today Forestry England cares for thousands of kinds of tree and shrub, including national collections, across the Old Arboretum and Silk Wood. The contrast between a familiar native tree and an unfamiliar maple or conifer is part of the pleasure. Look at bark, shape and seed as well as autumn colour. A tree collection is living history: specimens grow, age, suffer weather and sometimes need replacing. The old planting choices still shape the paths, while new care keeps the place worth exploring in every season. Forestry England opens Westonbirt to visitors with admission arrangements on its site. Check tickets before travelling, especially in autumn when booking ahead is advised. Use a map to choose between the Old Arboretum, Silk Wood and the canopy walkway rather than trying to see every tree at once. Dog rules differ between the two wooded areas, so check them before bringing one. Accessible routes and mobility help are described on the visitor page. Ask at the welcome area which trees are at their best today, then take time to stop beneath one you would otherwise pass. Tom has unpacked the imaginary suitcases. Take a real walk and let the trees show you what the seasons have packed instead.
