Torrylin Cairn on south Arran has lost enough stones to make a tidy builder weep, yet its Neolithic burial chamber still gives the game away. Come near Lagg for a place that has endured quarrying, ploughing and field clearing, then ask how it managed to keep its ancient secrets under such rude treatment. This was a Clyde type cairn, one of the tombs found around southwest Scotland and the Firth of Clyde. Such cairns once had a crescent shaped forecourt framed by upright stones, with a long chamber divided by slabs behind it. Torrylin's forecourt and façade have gone, and the mound is much smaller than it was. Its exposed chamber, though, lets you see the bones of the design without shifting a stone. The old builders deserve respect. Excavations in the nineteenth century and in 1900 found human remains, a Neolithic bowl fragment, a flint knife and animal bones. The mix suggests a place used repeatedly for burial and ritual over a long span, perhaps including feasting. Fox and otter bones also show that later animals found a use for the chamber. Tom imagines an otter taking up residence and declaring itself chief archaeologist; the excavation records make no such claim. An Arran tradition says a farmer who quarried it met a grim end; that is folklore. Historic Environment Scotland lists Torrylin as free to visit and open all year. It stands near Lagg rather than behind a staffed entrance, so check the route and conditions before you set off. Give the chamber a patient look, leave every stone where it is, and see whether Arran's much battered monument can outstare you.
