Toonagh Castle (Site of) — Report the wrong picture

Toonagh Castle belonged to the MacNamara family by 1580, occupying the south end of a low ridge where a stone outcrop still breaks through the grass. Mahon, son of Sean MacNamara, built the fortress according to Twigge, creating a defensible oval platform that measured eighteen metres along its longest axis. The structure vanished before a 1683 deposition, leaving only a scrub-covered scar where the family once commanded the surrounding land.

At the S end of a low N-S ridge with rock outcrop. This castle is not on the castle lists of 1570 or 1574, but according to Twigge the castle of “Tamhnach” was built by Mahon, son of Sean MacNamara. It was recorded by Frost (1893, 50) as belonging to the MacNamaras in 1580. It is not a mentioned in a deposition dated 1683, indicating that it had probably been demolished by that time. Oval grass and scrub-covered platform (dims. 18m N-S; 6m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 1-3m). Toonagh Castle was built by Mahon, son of Sean MacNamara, in the late 16th century. It is remembered as an example of Gaelic Irish castle architecture in a region shaped by local chieftain power before English colonial expansion.
