What is recorded here

Nicholas Herbert, son of Oliver Herbert of Killyon, lies beneath a flat table tomb in the southeast corner of a County Offaly graveyard. The stone marks his death on the 8th day of January in the year of our Lord God 1672, preserving a young man’s name beside his father’s lineage. It still stands south of the Church of Ireland building, unchanged since the seventeenth century.

Described by Carrigan (1905, ii, 14) as a 17th century graveslab with the following inscription 'HERE LYETH THE BODY OF NICHOLAS HERBERT, SON OF OLIVER HERBERT OF KILLIEN [Killyon], WHO DYED THE 8TH DAY OF JANUARY IN THE YEARE OF OUR LORD GOD 1672' (Bradley et. al. 1986, 51).
