Tomb

Inserted into the inner face of the N wall of the nave of St. Dominick's Abbey (TS061-025007-). This is a badly spawled limestone sculpture in high relief of a woman's head and neck. The roughly rectangular slab is roughly broken along the sinister and base and is probably broken along the dexter side also though it is a straight vertical break. Though badly worn the woman is wearing a pill-box head-dress and her head rests on a pillow. Her facial features are very worn but she appears to have a high forehead, oval-shaped eyes and a pointed chin. Her neck is very long and broadens out towards the shoulders, though the sculpture appears to end at the base of the neck. Stylistically it is quite similar to the effigies (TS061-025086-; TS061-025087- and TS061-025088-) in St. John the Baptist's graveyard which have been dated by Hunt (1974, vol. 1, 224) to the late 13th/early 14th century.
