Tomanine Bridge

Single-arch road bridge over river, extant 1844. Part creeper- or ivy-covered coursed or snecked rubble stone walls with lichen-spotted cut-granite stringcourses supporting parapets having lichen-spotted cut-granite segmental coping. Single segmental arch with lichen-spotted granite ashlar voussoirs. Sited spanning Boro River with unkempt banks to river.

A bridge representing an integral component of the mid nineteenth-century civil engineering heritage of County Wexford with the architectural value of the composition, one forming part of 'the new line of road lately formed…to Polmonty [sic] bridge' (Fraser 1844, 187), confirmed not only by the silver-grey granite dressings demonstrating good quality workmanship, but also by the elegant "sweep" of the arch making a pleasing visual statement at a crossing over the Boro River: meanwhile, a discreet benchmark remains of additional interest for the connections with cartography and the preparation of maps by the Ordnance Survey (established 1824).
