Linked to Saint Mocorha, a 7th-century Irish saint associated with several holy wells in County Mayo, the site is traditionally connected to cures for eye ailments and general healing. Local folklore suggests that the well's waters were once used in seasonal rituals and that the saint was known for his ascetic practices in the region.
