Tobernasool

Described by Ó Muirgheasa in 1936 as 'Tobar na Súl, "the Well of the Eyes," is the name of a Holy Well on the top of Cnoc a' Toighe, to the south of Churchill. Stations used to be made here till about 1860. Evidently the well-was regarded as a cure for sore eyes. Colmcille, when pursued on one occasion, is said to have jumped from the hill at the well to the rock, behind Churchill Railway Station, where the print of his two feet are still to be seen. Near this spot, where the footprints are, occur the remains of an old church with a font cut in the rock' (Ó Muirgheasa 1936, 155). Tobernasool, also known as Tobar na Súl or "the Well of the Eyes," was historically associated with pilgrimages and stations made by the faithful, likely for healing of eye ailments. The well, located on Cnoc a' Toighe, was venerated until around 1860 and reflects a tradition of holy wells linked to physical and spiritual healing in Irish folklore.
