Tobernakilla

Holy well

What is recorded here

Situated in a low-lying marshy area with a stream flowing adjacent to the site in an E-W direction. This site has been flooded and there is no visible trace of it above ground. According to the OS Name Books it was 'formerly resorted to as a holy well the water of which together with prayers offered to the Saints healed and cured divers sores and diseases'. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
Tobernakilla is associated with Saint Ninnidh (or Ninnid), a 6th-century Irish saint known for his ascetic practices and several holy wells linked to his name across Ireland. The site is traditionally connected to cures for skin ailments and was likely a place of pilgrimage and ritual washing.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
