Tobermartin is a small drystone well in County Kerry, Ireland, marked on maps since 1841 as the drinking place of St Martin. Tradition claims one person emerged healthy after submersion in its water, yet the same clear basin now supplies ordinary household needs. The transition from miraculous ritual to domestic utility does not diminish the well; it continues the human relationship with water, memory and survival.
Marked on the 1841-42 and 1914 OS maps as Tobermartin' (Tobar Máirtín - St Martin's Well).
Situation and Description: This small clear well comprises a circular area constructed of drystone and flagstones. Close by the well are some thorn trees.
Rounds/Legends/Offerings: According to the OSNB (Vol 18), 'An individual was restored to health by being immersed therein'. This well is now used for domestic purposes.
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 886. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Linked to St Martin, a 4th-century Christian saint venerated across Europe, the well may have been a site of pilgrimage or seasonal healing rituals. Traditionally, such wells were believed to offer cures for ailments, particularly skin conditions or fevers, with offerings of coins or clooties sometimes left as tokens of gratitude.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
