Tobermaclura

Holy well

What is recorded here

Described as Tobermaclura on the 1839 and 1924 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and located on a gentle E-facing slope. It was dedicated to St. Mochua Luachra, also known as Cronán (Ó Riain 2011, 470), who was the successor to St. Maodhóg of Ferns (WX015-003002-) (pers. comm. C. Ó Cruaolaoich). A pattern was held at the well on the 22nd of June until c. 1810 when it was abolished, according to John O'Donovan writing c. 1840 (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 92). The well is a natural spring, but there is no evidence of veneration. The church of Meelnagh (WX027-004001-) is c. 180m to the WSW. Tobermaclura in Killagowan is associated with St. Mochua Luachra (also known as Cronán), a 7th-century Irish saint and successor to St. Finbarr of Cork. The well was likely visited for healing and spiritual purposes, reflecting a tradition common in early Christian Ireland of linking holy wells to saints for miraculous cures and blessings.
