Explorer Tom Crannog in Baile Dhúlocha is an island that got drained out of spite by some engineer with a grudge. The local sheep are judging your walking form from the shore. Get there early and have it all to yourself before the ducks arrive.
Cornamona BridgeBridge · 1.1 miExplorer Tom Cornamona Bridge in Carrick West is hiding a treasure, and I swear it’s just a rusty biscuit tin. Alexander Nimmo built this arch back in ’22, and it’s still pretending to be important. If it’s dry enough for your shoes, hop across and check.
kiln1.2 miExplorer Tom Kiln in Cornamona has been baking lime for centuries and still hasn’t lost its cool or its tooled limestone front. Bring wellies because it’s on a hillock and won’t lower itself for anyone, no matter how much you beg.
Enclosure in An Chloch Bhreac UachtairEnclosure · 2.0 miExplorer Tom Enclosure in An Chloch Bhreac Uachtair is an enclosure with no description, so I’m guessing it’s where the local sheep go to file their complaints about the farmer. It’s probably very polite and formal, which is why nobody noticed it. Bring your nan, she'll know more than me anyway.
Explorer Tom Castlekirk is called Hen's Castle, and no, I did not name it after my poultry empire. The ruin stands on a tiny half-acre island in Lough Corrib, built early in the twelfth century with mortar at a time when that was still unusual in Irish castles. Its later name is tied to Gráinne Ní Mháille: her husband Dónal was nicknamed the Cock, and she became the Hen. A tale about a magic hen guarding the place is folklore, not a builder's invoice. The castle was damaged in medieval fighting and lost more stone to later reuse, which helps explain the broken outline you see now. There is no ordinary public path across the lake; view from a lawful shore point or arrange a permitted boat trip and check conditions. Give the Hen the island to herself. I have heard enough to know she would win an argument.
IslandmoreIslet · 2.8 miExplorer Tom Islandmore ended up in the wrong place because it was napping during the tectonic shift and missed its cue to move to the correct position on the map. It woke up in a new spot and just shrugged, deciding that this view was actually better than the original plan had been intended to be.
Earls IslandIslet · 2.8 miExplorer Tom Earls Island is in the middle of a fairy dispute over parking rights that’s been going on for centuries. Nobody has moved yet because they’re all too stubborn to lose. Stand on the spot and imagine the gossip it's heard.
Explorer Tom Lackavrea thinks Dublin tourists are all winded after ten minutes of walking, so it sits back smugly watching them gasp for air. Perfect detour when the satnav has a meltdown and points you into the bracken.
Doon RockNamed rock · 4.2 miExplorer Tom Doon Rock is stuck in a feud between two families over who owns the view, which is annoying because it’s just a rock sitting there doing nothing. It’s got that 'I’m important' energy despite being completely stationary and covered in lichen like a forgotten garden gnomes’ club. The argument has been going on for decades and nobody has blinked yet. A proper spot for a flask of tea and a big think
Derroura ForestForest · 4.2 miExplorer Tom Derroura Forest is locked in a bitter feud with the rain, which keeps showing up uninvited. The trees are getting wet and grumpy about the whole situation. Have a look and decide if I was lying about how dramatic this place is being.
Ballindeonagh Castle (in ruins)Castle, unclassified · 4.4 miExplorer Tom Ballindeonagh Castle in Ceapach Na Gcapall is just a corner of a room by Lough Mask. Its first owner’s escape plan was clearly 'run', because there’s no door left. Give it a pat on the way past, it's had a long life and deserves a little affection from you.
Explorer Tom Corcogemore hosted a love story next to it where two people fell in love and then immediately disagreed about whose turn it was to carry the bag. The hill just watched them squabble with amusement. Bring the dog, it'll have opinions.
