Tober Bury

Situated in a fold on the N bank of an E-W stream at the E side of Lough Allen. This is a circular stone-lined structure (int. diam. 1.2m; D 0.5m) open to the S with the wall beginning to corbel in over the well. It was reconstructed in the 1980s and is accessible by a path from a green road c. 30m to the E. The water is rich in iron, although no cure is recorded. The pattern was formerly held on March 8th and the well was dedicated to St Beo-Aodh of Ardcarn (RO006-103003-) (Clancy and Forde 1980, 7). Linked to Saint Cleighran Beg, the well is associated with healing traditions and is believed to have curative properties, particularly for eye ailments. The site's circular stone construction and orientation suggest a long history of ritual use, possibly pre-dating Christian association.
