Thomas David McConkey was born in County Tyrone, Ireland on July 29, 1815, the son of Squire Thomas McConkey and Sarah Porter. He left that Irish soil behind at age thirteen when his family crossed the Atlantic to settle in Innisfil Township, Upper Canada. The boy likely carried the smell of green fields and the sound of his father's voice into a new world of foreign lakes and harder work.
