This blue commemorative plaque records: Father Thomas Byles of St. Helen's Catholic Church, Ongar left this station on 10 April 1912 to join RMS Titanic on her maiden voyage. He died assisting and comforting others after the ship struck an iceberg 26 February 1870 - 15 April 1912 Recorded plaque organisation: Ongar Millennium History Society.
Thomas Byles was a Catholic priest who volunteered his services aboard the RMS Titanic, ultimately perishing when the ship sank on its maiden voyage; he is remembered for his selfless acts of assisting and providing comfort to passengers during the disaster.
