This blue commemorative plaque records: Site of a chapel dedicated to St Thomas Becket murdered in 1170. It was completed shortly afterwards for pilgrims venerating relics of Becket brought here from Canterbury. Recorded plaque organisation: Peterborough Civic Society.
Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his murder in 1170, is remembered for his conflict with King Henry II over the rights and privileges of the Church. His death made him a saint and martyr, leading to his widespread veneration across Europe.
