Thomas Addis Emmet was born in Hammond's Marsh, Cork, in 1764, the elder brother of Robert Emmet and a senior architect of the United Irishmen's radical plans. He fled to America after the failed rebellions, reinvented himself as a New York lawyer, and served as state Attorney General in 1812. The younger brother bled for Ireland on a scaffold; the older brother crossed the ocean and built a life in the republic his brother had died imagining.
