Explorer TomThis Museum Is (Not) Obsolete on Church Hill in Ramsgate has a name that argues with itself before you reach the door. Tom has come to settle the dispute, but experimental musical machines and rescued electronics will make him press a button and start another.
Musician and inventor Sam Battle, also known as Look Mum No Computer, launched the museum in 2020. Its purpose is to keep obsolete scientific and musical technology alive and evolving, a more entertaining fate than gathering dust in a cupboard. Displays range across electronics, laboratory gear, telephones, toys, sound and vision. Tom suspects the machines have formed a committee to demand another chance at fame.
This is an interactive museum, so leave room to experiment. Visit Thanet describes educational displays about do-it-yourself electronics and a thousand-oscillator drone synthesiser that holds a Guinness World Record. The museum's site shows telephone experiments and a church organ among its projects. That does not mean every switch is yours to flick: follow the team's instructions, then see what noises the collection makes. Tom may announce that he has invented a new instrument; nobody has yet asked for an encore.
The address is 5–7 Church Hill, Ramsgate, CT11 8RA. Public hours are Saturday and Sunday afternoons, 1 to 4, with private sessions available by arrangement. Admission is £7 for adults, £5 for children under thirteen and free for under-threes; the operator asks for card payment. There is no museum parking, and visitors with access requirements should contact the team ahead. Check the homepage for closures before setting out; even Tom cannot persuade a locked door to play a tune.
