Overview
The Whitworth grew from an 1889 public art gift into a university gallery, preserving major textile and print collections in a building joined to its park.

Supporters founded the institute to bring art, design and education to Manchester, and its permanent gallery building opened in 1908.

Collectors, artists, teachers and university staff built strong holdings of watercolours, prints, wallpapers and textiles.

The gallery joined the University of Manchester, changed its displays and gained a large modern extension opening into Whitworth Park in 2015.
What survives
The red-brick Edwardian rooms, collections and newer glass wings survive as one connected public gallery.
