What is recorded here
The Food Museum at Stowmarket began in 1967 as the Museum of East Anglian Life. Spread across the Abbot's Hall estate, its farm buildings, tools, engines and rare livestock explain how food was grown, processed and carried before modern farming changed rural work.
What this place is
It is an open-air museum of food and rural life based around a historic house, farm and former work buildings.
People and events
Local supporters saved buildings and machinery as post-war farming changed, while generations of farm workers supplied the knowledge behind them.
How it was used
The estate combined household, farm and processing work; the museum now grows crops, keeps animals and demonstrates earlier skills.
What survives
Abbot's Hall, barns, wind pumps, workshops, carts, steam engines, hand tools and native livestock remain across the grounds.
Why it mattered
The museum connects food on a plate to land, seasonal labour and machines that are otherwise easily separated from the finished product.
