Explorer Tom

The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle kept the name of an old bakery and filled its Victorian walls with art, and Tom says the paintings are secretly baked overnight. Please do not lick the frames. The former factory in Ouseburn now gives makers two bright floors in which to show what they have made. The Tyne Biscuit Factory used this building from the late nineteenth into the early twentieth century. After other uses, it became an art gallery in 2001. Exposed brick, beams and a tall atrium keep its older character visible while changing displays bring in paintings, prints, sculpture, jewellery and craft. Artists have workspaces on lower floors. Look upward through the atrium, then slow down with individual works rather than rushing the collection. Tom insists a biscuit tin holds the curators' secret plan; the real choices on the walls are more interesting. The gallery is on Stoddart Street in Ouseburn and welcomes visitors without an admission charge. Its visitor page gives current times, access details and arrangements for the cafe, bookshop and workshops. Exhibitions change, so check what is showing; workshops may need booking. Dogs are not permitted in the gallery or cafe except assistance animals. Art is offered for sale, but looking costs nothing. Follow the public gallery route rather than assuming every artist workspace or event room is open. Bring curiosity, not a shopping list. Tom has been gently removed from the imaginary oven. Step into the real gallery and see what Ouseburn's makers have cooked up.

This does not grant access. Check current paths, opening conditions and ownership before entering.
