Templetaggart Church (in Ruins) (193

In NE corner of graveyard (14615). Fragmentary remains of rectangular church (c. 14.5m E-W; c. 6m N-S). Central portions of N (L 3.5m) and S (L c. 3m) walls all that now stand; E end of church marked by line of overgrown foundations; W end marked by slight dip. Most of inner face of S wall collapsed; splayed side of (possible) wall press (Wth at rear 0.5m) at E end; line of S wall at E end visible as low linear mound (L 4m), with 1m length of walling visible on external face. Part of inner face of N wall collapsed; limestone jamb of door at E end of surviving portion- Grove White (1905-25, vol. 4, 190-1) described this in 1907 as 'arched ... 6ft. 2in. from ground to point of arch'. Ruin of church of Rossagh, known as Templetaggart. Reported 'in ruins' in 1615 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 184). Smith (1750, vol. 1, 333) states that 'the parish of Doneraile...had in it, formerly, several chapels of ease; viz. at Rossagh...'. A church here is listed in Papal Taxation of 1291 (Brady ibid.).
