Tarbat Discovery Centre stands by St Colman's church at Portmahomack, where digging in the 1990s brought a Pictish past back into the daylight. More than twelve centuries ago, skilled hands here carved stone with creatures, people and intricate patterns. I would ask what every mark meant; the stones answer slowly, and that is half the pleasure. The centre displays fragments of great cross-slabs uncovered during the excavations, along with tools and traces of early medieval craft. Finds include moulds used to make religious objects in precious metal, enamel and glass. Together they show a community doing far more than standing around waiting to become an archaeological site. The old church setting, the peninsula outside and the finds inside help put the makers back in a real place. Take a close look at the carved fragments before reaching for an easy label such as 'Celtic mystery'. The surviving work shows design, skill and faith; the museum explains what the dig revealed and what remains uncertain. Its displays and events also connect the longer history of Tarbat with the people living here now. I may invent a stone beast's name for my own amusement, but the carver deserves credit for making it memorable without me. The centre opens in 2026 through 31 October, normally Monday to Saturday ten until four and Sunday afternoons. From November through February, visits are by appointment only, so do not arrive in winter expecting an open door. Under-eighteens and students enter free; adult tickets are charged. Check the current hours and any event before travelling to Portmahomack. Give the carved stones time: they have waited a long while for this conversation.
