What is recorded here
Tangwick Haa Museum occupies a laird's house built in the late seventeenth century for the Cheyne family. After the last resident laird died in 1840 it became a summer house, caretaker's property and workshop, then stood largely empty until restoration led to the museum opening in 1987.
Why it was built
John Cheyne, first laird of Tangwick, built the Haa as a substantial three-storey house expressing the family's landholding and trading position in Northmavine.
People and work
Eight Cheyne lairds were linked with the house; their income depended on estates and trade, including fish supplied by tenants for markets beyond Shetland.
How it changed
After John Cheyne VIII died in 1840, the family used it mainly in summer; twentieth-century workshop use and vacancy ended with restoration from 1985.
What survives
The thick-walled laird's house and former kitchen range survive with a renewed roof, windows and interior woodwork, now containing local rooms and displays.
Why it mattered
Tangwick Haa preserves the home of a family whose land and trading power shaped the district, while its rescue gave Northmavine history a permanent local home.
