Subulter Church (in Ruins)

Forming NW corner of graveyard (14619). Fragmentary remains of rectangular church, described by Bowman (1934, 688) as measuring internally 38ft 8in by 18ft 5in. Section of N wall alone stands (H 2.75m; L 4.5m), built with large squared sandstone blocks, founded on plinth; Bowman (ibid.) also described 3ft length of W gable, 71/2ft high, since fallen. Stonework of surviving wall is possibly Romanesque (12th century) in appearance. Remains of parish church of Subulter. Church here listed in Papal Taxation of 1291. Reported 'in ruins' in 1774 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 379-80). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
