Structure

A half-split timber exposed along its length in the drain face (L 1.1m; Wth 0.15m min.; D 0.08m). It appears to have been secured in place with two pegs. The pegs are adjacent, 0.15m above the timber, and are set at 80° and 45°. The wood is in poor condition consistent with having been exposed for some time prior to being enveloped by peat. In addition to splitting, the timber has a metal-cut chisel point on one end. This site lies in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with ericaceous remains. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 2003. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument.
