Death and rebirth repeat in the peatland. Something human may have touched the alder before the water took it back. The basin keeps both possibilities alive.
A milled piece of alder brushwood (L 0.7m min.; diam. 0.043m) lying on the field surface in Eriophorum containing Sphagnum and ericaceous root. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 1996. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument.
