What is recorded here

Half a metre of brushwood lies in an Offaly field, one end chewed smooth by time or teeth. The Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit, University College Dublin, recorded it in 1996 and declined to call it a monument because the evidence is thin. Caimin O'Brien and Paul Walsh revised that judgement before it went public on 23 May 2011. The wood may have marked a boundary, supported a fence or simply fallen where it landed. In peatland country, even a rejected structure can hold the shape of a forgotten arrangement.

A piece of brushwood (L 0.56m min.; diam. 0.054m) on the field surface which is badly milled at one end. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 1996. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument.
